Maria is a beautiful but troubled woman adrift in a city in southern Spain. She drinks, smokes and steals, desperate for oblivion and angry at the entire world. Emotional rescue arrives in the form of her own mother, who comes to stay with her daughter when Maria’s father needs surgery at the hospital in town. The mother cooks, crochets and befriends the man downstairs while patiently trying to reach out to her daughter, whose bitterness is no match for the mother’s love and devotion.

The film Solas beautifully portrays the loneliness we all feel in life, regardless of age.

The main character – Maria, a 35 year old woman becomes pregnant with a man who rejects her and wants her to have an abortion. At the same time however, she really wants to keep the child. Madre, the mother of Maria, who has devoted her life to her husband, a man who has always been a very authoritarian figure in the family has an emotional bond with one of Maria’s neighbor’s – an old and lonely man, whose wife passed away a few years ago.

This is a sensual story of life’s hardships, family ties, broken relationships, personal dreams, and a need to be with someone or simply be heard by another human.
